Mark Alsweiler is known for his quirky representations of the built environment and its curious inhabitants. These new works see Alsweiler boldly lean towards reductive abstraction in exchange for a previous sense of realism, yet the idiosyncratic mood remains.

Architecturally inspired compositions of flat geometric shapes and a dramatic use of colour have replaced the soft colours and linear perspective of earlier work. The palette is largely warm blocks of burgundy, orange, mustard and pink are placed in high contrast to cream and beige. Alsweiler’s signature pops of ultramarine blue remain. The few figures that do appear are more akin to lego figurines, robotically poised in the foreground of the picture plane, retaining realism in their faces only.

Whilst Alsweiler humbly states he ‘works around ideas of balance and the quotidian’, there is an unmistakeable sense of the absurd in his work – the figures appear ‘programmed’, out of place and out of harmony, the built environment looms large and assumes the highest importance.

I interpret the work as a satirical critique of modern life and the facades we adopt, up to the point of being completely out of tune with our true nature. It is, curiously, unsettling yet entertaining at the same time.”
— Modern Times Gallery Director, Amy Malin
