As part of Melbourne Design Week 2019, Modern Times presents Material Thought, an exhibition of contemporary furniture, lighting and objects by some of Australia’s most innovative and creative designers. Discover new work by Steelotto, Nicolette Johnson, Christopher Boots, Henry Wilson, Ebony Heidenreich, Maddie Sharrock, Studio ac-s, Alterfact and Coco Flip.
These designers are developing and manufacturing their products in Australia. They select their materials with care and consideration for aesthetics, suitability, longevity and sustainability.
The designers work with an awareness and a certain burden that materials can be of unknown origins, that extraction of any natural material has consequences on the environment and that natural materials such as stone and silver are finite.
The theme of Melbourne Design Week is Design Experiments – ‘How can design shape the future?’. Every choice a designer makes has an impact on the future, and these independent designers balance their experimental practice and design decisions with the objective of making objects of beauty intended to last a lifetime.
Melbourne Design Week is an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV
