Is your furniture new or used?
Our vintage design furniture is sourced across Europe, including Denmark and other Scandinavian countries, Italy and The Netherlands. All of our highly collectable pieces are hand-selected on our annual buying trips, where we tirelessly seek out the most unique and special pieces for Modern Times. We also have a small range of new pieces exclusive to Modern Times that are all made and designed in Melbourne.
Is the furniture restored?
We lovingly restore and refurbish every item. At Modern Times, our restoration team work hard to return our special pieces of vintage furniture to their former glory. Our Head Restorer specialises in mid-century furniture including traditional Danish weaving techniques and leads a passionate and highly skilled team. We believe that honouring the history and integrity of each piece enriches the furniture with a unique story, and love watching each piece come back to life.
Is the timber solid or veneer?
Our furniture is made from a variety of materials, including solid and veneered timbers such as teak, rosewood, beech and oak, leather, and marble. It’s common to find a piece of furniture made from a combination of timber types – for example, a sideboard may have a veneer face with solid legs, handles and edging. Scandinavian pieces often feature a book-matched grain pattern, which is only possible with specially selected timber veneers. Veneer is a thin sliver of hardwood timber cut along the grain. The result is a crown or ‘cathedral’ figure, a piece is chosen which is of high value and beauty.
