My Ritual: Connie Augoustinos

Rituals inspire and motivate us, they bond us and help us form community. The objects within Modern Rituals: The Art of Living have been inspired by rituals big and small; some are deeply personal while others are subtle actions incorporated into daily life.

Connie Augoustinos is an Adelaide based maker who creates ceramic sculptural vessels and objects reminiscent of ritualistic artefacts. With an intuitive making process and a nod to her Hellenic heritage, Connie’s work considers a diversity of influences, ranging from origin stories to femininity and the natural world.

Here, we speak to Connie about her series of mirrors, When the Sun’s Light Strikes the Moon – created exclusively for Modern Rituals – as well as a ritual she practices and the meaning it holds.

Connie's series of mirrors titled 'When the Sun's Light Strikes the Moon' has been created exclusively for 'Modern Rituals: The Art of Living'.
These stunning mirrors feature handmade ceramic frames.

1) Tell us about a ritual that is part of your daily life – be it connected to society, community or self.

My daily ritual is a very simple one. After waking up in the morning I make myself coffee in my percolator. While it’s boiling on the stove I water my garden or tidy up around the house. When my coffee is ready, I choose a hand-made cup from my collection, take a seat outside and enjoy my coffee with a few pats for my dog Atticus.

Connie's ritual is special because it allows her to stop and enjoy a quiet moment at home before her day begins.
I have created a space and time for myself to set my intentions for the day, and give my pup some extra love; things that I would otherwise feel "too busy" to do.”

2) What does this ritual mean to you?

This ritual of mine has only come about in the last year, as a means to be more conscious about spending money and wasting materials associated with take-away coffee. I am also really good at sleeping (!) so it gives me a lovely reason to get out of bed. I have created a space and time for myself to set my intentions for the day, and give my pup some extra love; things that I would otherwise feel “too busy” to do.

The objects within 'Modern Rituals: The Art of Living' are inspired by rituals we practice and the meanings they hold.
