My Ritual: Hana Vasak

Rituals inspire and motivate us, they bond us and help us form community. The objects within Modern Rituals: The Art of Living have been inspired by rituals big and small; some are deeply personal while others are subtle actions incorporated into daily life.

Drawing inspiration from sculpture, natural forms, ancient pottery and her travels, Hana Vasak of Dáša creates small collections of individually handcrafted sculptural vessels that are unique in both shape and form, from her home studio in Melbourne.

She created a series of vessels exclusively for Modern Rituals: The Art of Living, and here, she tells us about a ritual of her own.

Hana created the Minoan vase and Pyrgos vessel (both pictured) exclusively for Modern Rituals: The Art of Living.

1) Tell us about a ritual that is part of your daily life – be it connected to society, community or self.

A new ritual I have begun this year is a weekly walk along the Merri Creek Trail after my studio day. Working from my home studio can be quite the solitary experience. It can be mediative, but within this solitary nature I also find myself deep within my endless thoughts, at times too in my head.

This new ritual has allowed me to take time for myself clear my head at the end of a long day of making.

She says 'the smaller, simpler moments in my daily life centre around objects, and they give me a lot of pleasure'. Similarly, her weekly walk along Merri Creek brings a sense of calm.
This small ritual I have created for myself has given me the chance and space to invite calmness into my week.”
— Hana Vasak

2) What does this ritual mean to you?

This small ritual I have created for myself has given me the chance and space to invite calmness into my week. Balancing a full time workload and fitting in my studio days can at times feel overwhelming. Having this time in nature allows me to slow down for a moment and contemplate my thoughts, my week ahead and what I have made that day.

The objects within 'Modern Rituals: The Art of Living' are inspired by rituals we practice and the meanings they hold.
