About the work:
Conch Shell, Original Painting by Hannah Nowlan.
This piece is part of Talismans, Rafts, Mementos: a group exhibition showcasing the work of the entire community of Modern Times artists. Throughout 2020 artists used their practice to make sense of what was happening, and this show celebrates this rich vein of creative output.
“For this group show, I’ve chosen to explore a fluid, smoke-like haze that has filled this year with exterior uncertainty and interior reflection. These works reference a state of immortality symbolised by the pattern work of shells. Referencing how the landscape will always continue to recover and rebirth, but also how we withdraw and return within for survival,” says Hannah.
About the Artist:
Long steeped in notions of sensory ghosts, mythology and spirits, Hannah Nowlan’s work dissects personal narratives and notions of self as a process of ritual and remedy. The brevity and granular states of life can be broken down in her studio, where painting becomes an action of story telling and secondary, a method of healing.
