About the work:

Rainbow Memories, Original Artwork by Madeleine Thornton-Smith.

This piece is part of Radiant Dreams, a group exhibition showcasing the work of more than 50 artists from the Modern Times community. Radiant Dreams invited our artists to unleash their most vibrant work, embracing colour, movement and verve. The resulting works are a buoyant collection reflecting optimism, energy and hope as we emerge from the monotonous routine of lockdown.

”Over the last few years, I have developed an interest in challenging the medium by handbuilding traditional archetypes, experimenting with materials and casting in clay. In painting, the canvas and the frame; in sculpture, the plinth; in the studio, polystyrene, paper pulp, expanding foam and bubble wrap. Remediation is the act of re-forming an object out of a material from which it isn’t usually made. My work for Radiant Dreams continues these processes, with the addition of colour, memory and past techniques,” Thornton-Smith says.

”The various Melbourne lockdowns have been periods of struggle, but they have also been times of intense contemplation, nostalgia and change. Instead of just casting paintings, I have been able to paint them, employing all the colours I used in a past life. I have had time to go outside, to make friends with magpies and to grow out my fringe. To sleep in and remember my dreams. ”

About the Artist:

Madeleine Thornton-Smith is a Melbourne based artist with training in painting and ceramics. Her work questions where distinct mediums end and others begin; she has a particular interest in challenging the archetypes of the vessel, frame, plinth and canvas, interrogating material hierarchies and raising questions about the status and value of ceramics, art and craft.
