About the work:
Round-A-Rabbit, Original Artwork by Yan Guo.
This piece is part of Vivid Nostalgia, a joint exhibition by Lucy Tolan and Yan Guo.
Vivid Nostalgia is a sublime collaboration between ceramicist Lucy Tolan and painter Yan Guo, exploring architectural forms within the context of memories, both real and imagined. The resulting works are a shared vision of constructed environments, merging abstraction and realism through the use of basic geometric forms, while simultaneously capturing the organic nature of human touch and interaction.
Painted over the past two years, Guo’s work explores the concept of memories and the preservation of observations – the convergence of hard and soft edges using both traditional brush strokes and airbrushing techniques creates both precision and haziness, an analogy for the nature of memories and our handling and recollection of them in the future. Guo’s work also plays with visual juxtaposition: ‘I invite viewers to uncover more than just the casual observation of strangers – these works aim to depict my memories conceptually to enable them to be shared collectively. The compositions of buildings and people often result in strange and unusual juxtapositions that are unexpectedly harmonious, intending to allude to numerous possible narratives,’ she says.
About the Artist:
Yan Guo is a self-taught Melbourne-based artist currently working from her home studio in Thornbury. Having had a background in urban planning and currently working in the field of interior design, Guo has always had a strong interest in the interaction between people and buildings, and is particularly compelled by the notion that we inhabit spaces of our own creation; that our lives are full of personal ‘constructs’ – whether physical, societal or emotional.
