About the work:

Holding Her From Behind, Original Artwork by Caroline Walls.

This piece is part of Chromatic Retreat, a group exhibition showcasing the work of 17 Australian artists exploring their practice within the limits of a largely achromatic palette.

“Holding Her From Behind was created within a larger body of work of mine titled Shades Of Her, where I used charcoal on paper to explore the ambiguity of time and a longing for human connection during 2020. Having never previously explored the use of black on white shading within my drawing practice, I found the process of slowly and methodically building up the layers of charcoal to create depth and darkness provided a sense of calm and purpose within the disquietude of the year. The black and grey tones within the piece underscore the intense emotions I was feeling at the time and without the use of any colour the artwork offers no true concept of time or place,” Walls says.
