About the work:

Reflective Subsurface No3, Original Artwork by Daniel O’Toole.

This piece is part of Radiant Dreams, a group exhibition showcasing the work of more than 50 artists from the Modern Times community. Radiant Dreams invited our artists to unleash their most vibrant work, embracing colour, movement and verve. The resulting works are a buoyant collection reflecting optimism, energy and hope as we emerge from the monotonous routine of lockdown.

“When I think of the words Radiant Dreams, I imagine being illuminated by white light and a feeling of weightlessness, immersion in the surreal and an ever shifting narrative of infinite potential. I hope that my recent refraction paint series will evoke similar feelings by way of gentle interruption to the viewer’s depth perception.

Reflective Subsurface No3, extends on the idea that colour can act as a vehicle to express the behaviour of light. Using reflective iridescent film known as ‘Dichroic film’ I have sculpted a form out of aluminium sheet and layered it with the reflective layer. The result is a shifting range of colours depending on the light source and the viewing angle, this interactive quality and the time based refraction event that takes place as a form of visual obstruction to the surface of the work occurs through the use of semi-transparent acrylic.

As in a dream, the detail is unclear and we are left grasping at the truth and memory of what has occurred and this lack of certainty amplifies the surreal atmosphere of the piece,” O’Toole says.

About the Artist:

Currently based in Melbourne, Daniel O’Toole’s work builds on the Los Angeles ‘Light and Space’ movement of the 1960’s, positioned in the post-digital contact of contemporary Australia.Working across the mediums of painting, video, sound and installation, he blurs the lines between disciplines – always looking for an outcome which unites the various aspects of his practice in a cohesive way.

O’Toole has exhibited regularly around Australia in over 30 exhibitions since the beginning of his professional career in 2008. He has shown at the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Art Gallery of Benalla, performed live painting at the Powerhouse Museum and worked internationally on residency programs in Berlin and Lyon. O’Toole showed a video piece in an exhibition in Lyon titled ‘Ici maintenant’ (here now) and was part of the 2017 Lyon Biennale. More recently, O’Toole has had a sell out show with Curatorial and Co, Sydney, and in September 2021 was part of the Brussels Affordable Art Fair, Belgium, represented by Nationale 8 Gallery.
