About the work:
Ring A Ring O’ Rosie, Ceramic Vessel by Joana Partyka.
This piece is part of Radiant Dreams, a group exhibition showcasing the work of more than 50 artists from the Modern Times community. Radiant Dreams invited our artists to unleash their most vibrant work, embracing colour, movement and verve. The resulting works are a buoyant collection reflecting optimism, energy and hope as we emerge from the monotonous routine of lockdown.
”While most of my work of the past few years has been heavily informed by negative events and the despair they have triggered in me, I tried to take the opposite approach with these pieces. I found it quite challenging to channel optimism in the presence of so much ongoing misery, and at times questioned whether an expression of hope in my work was honest or genuine,” Partyka says.
”The Czech Republic’s first president Vaclav Havel once asked, “Isn’t it the moment of most profound doubt that gives birth to new certainties? Perhaps hopelessness is the very soil that nourishes human hope.” I think that sentiment encapsulates these four pieces: they were born from a place of hopelessness, and now exist as bright and energetic expressions of hope.”
About the Artist:
Joana Partyka is a ceramic artist and political staffer based in Boorloo (Perth), WA. Working out of her home studio, Partyka primarily uses a coil-building technique and fires each piece up to six times to achieve the desired glaze effect. Her work is deeply informed by the political context and pushes the boundaries of the ceramic medium, which she has been practising for a few years.
