About the work:
Shuffle, Original Artwork by Liam Haley.
This piece is part of Chromatic Retreat, a group exhibition showcasing the work of 17 Australian artists exploring their practice within the limits of a largely achromatic palette.
“For years I’ve challenged myself to use more colour in my artwork, mostly as a tool to express more emotion, symbolism and reflection towards my surroundings. Without colour, there is only light and dark and shades in-between. Chromatic Retreat gave me a chance to break down these colour constructs and return to more a direct way of making. From white paper came black ink and watercolour washes in light layers to create a foundry for materials like crayons and pencils. Working with expressive marks and creating multiple layers emphasised the texture and tone between the materials. These artworks are an interpretation of a rich Autumnal world of colour transformed through monochromatic line, tone and shape,” Haley says.
