About the work:
Weight of Absence, Original Artwork by Kayleigh Heydon.
This piece is part of Chromatic Retreat, a group exhibition showcasing the work of 17 Australian artists exploring their practice within the limits of a largely achromatic palette.
“I wrote my thesis on achromatic works – on artists’ use (of lack-there-of) of colour. I looked closely at Reinhardt, Rauschenberg, Malevich and even composer John Cage and how these artists responded to their political and personal environments; where huge shifts were taking place, they began echoing their emotional responses to their environments in their works. They seemed to deduct rather than add, to create simplicity, to communicate a numbness, to make space in their application and mirror their fatigue. It seems fitting to be given such a task at this time,” Heydon says.
“My artworks use intense contrast and solid lines to create a separateness between moments and use different shades created from the weight of my hand to communicate the heaviness of different emotions.”
