About the work:
Winged Water Beast, Original Artwork by Hannah Nowlan.
This piece is part of Chromatic Retreat, a group exhibition showcasing the work of 17 Australian artists exploring their practice within the limits of a largely achromatic palette.
“Long steeped in exploring notions of selfhood and spirit, it’s often my relationship with darkness and the brevity of life where I find meaning, lessons and eventually answers. Autobiographical figures and motifs linger between emotional, dreamlike and mythical experiences,” Nowlan says.
“In the absence of colour, the focus falls on the emphasis of light and dark. These works represent inner depths, cavities, turmoil and darkness. The personal darkness found within ourselves but also across the history of mythology and folklore more broadly. Central to these paintings are the ambiguities of the unknown: hybrid entities, the deep sea, the night sky and the underworld.”
About the Artist:
Hannah Nowlan completed her Bachelors in Fine Art Drawing and Printmaking with Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in 2015, and currently works out of her home studio as a visual artist and partner in her family business ‘Grain of Descent’. Considerably influenced by the surf culture of Victoria’s coastline, Nowlan’s practice attempts to communicate relaxed and therapeutic atmosphere of Australia’s vast natural landscapes.
