This work is part of Lilli Waters solo exhibition ‘Others Dream’ where large scale photographs meld the female figure with the landscape in unsettling, otherworldly scenes. Naked female figures in poses of stillness and fluid movement inhabit primordial landscapes, from scarlet lakes to primitive scrub. These elements combine with Lilli’s deft use of light to create a dramatic narrative that unfolds before the viewer.
“In these photographs I wanted to communicate a sense that the figures belong and are even nourished by these potentially hostile surroundings. At dawn and dusk, the edge of slumber and first light, these figures awaken out of the darkness and live in the hours when others dream,” says Lilli.
Lilli is an award-winning photographer – most recently this series was Highly Commended in the 2019 Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers Awards. Lilli has exhibited widely across Australia and internationally, notably including the Venice Biennale Festival in 2017 and 2018. Her work also featured in the films Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Lilli photographs women to empower both them and herself.
