This womb-style chair is a rare design by Koene Oberman for Gelderland. Oberman founded Gelderland in the 1950s; he built the company with a desire to create modern furniture. He only worked as a designer for Gelderland for a short period of time, before enlisting other iconic Dutch designers such as Rob Parry to work for the company. As he only designed a few pieces, this exceptional womb-style chair is highly covetable.
The high back, the armrests that fold out like delicate wings, and light steel frame result in an elegant and beautifully-executed armchair. It’s inviting – you can imagine curling up with a book, just as easily as sitting while socialising with friends. Newly upholstered in a lush black and white In Style fabric and featuring subtle button detailing across the inside of the backrest, it’s a classic vintage Dutch piece with a sleek contemporary edge.
