Settee by by Josef Hoffmann for J & J Kohn, Austria, 1910

This is a truly remarkable vintage piece with a rich history. It was designed by famous Austrian architect and founding member of both the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkstaette movements, Josef Hoffmann and manufactured by Jacob & Josef Kohn. This piece follows the style of Hoffman’s Fledermaus pieces – made famous after Hoffman used them in the Cabaret Fledermaus in Austria at the end of 1907. They were first exhibited however by Jacob & Josef Kohn at the Milan International Exhibition in 1906, and while rare, they are widely celebrated and sought after today.

This is a magnificent settee or bench; the ornate bent beechwood set is trimmed to the legendary nut wood look and features original upholstery – a charming mosaic patterned velvet. A piece for the true design appreciator to treasure.

Hoffman’s creations drew on characteristics from Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts, and paved the way for future movements such as Art Deco, Bauhaus, International Style and Modernism. His aesthetic beautifully represented the philosophical shifts that defined art and design at the turn of the century – a fascinating period of design made even more fascinating through pieces of furniture that have survived their creators.
