Designed by industrial designer and sculptor Aldo van den Nieuwelaar for iconic manufacturer Pastoe in the 1970s, the A’dammer Sideboard is a distinctive and elegant example of 20th Century Dutch design. Its most distinguishing feature is the ribbed roller doors, which slide horizontally from the centre and disappear into the rear section of the sideboard. This innovative and beautifully-executed feature is highly desirable, and has been widely emulated. Not only does this piece encapsulate Dutch design sentiment and aesthetics, but it is Dutch at its very core: A’dammer, pronounced ‘Amsterdammer’, is derived from the parking bollards used throughout Amsterdam.
Made from lacquered steel and plastic and minimal in its design, it enhances the Dutch approach to mid-century functionalism and their considered application of man-made materials.
Some standout features include the rounded top and bottom; the effect against the brutalist form is very appealing. Also, standing directly on the floor, it has a grounding and solid effect. It also features the Pastoe makers mark, and various shelving inside.
