Wim Reitveld is an iconic Dutch designer whose contributions to modernism are still celebrated today. A ‘Goed Wonen’ (Good Living) foundation member, Rietveld worked with some of the most influential manufacturers such as Ahrend de Cirkel, and designers of the time such as Friso Kamer. What’s more, Wim was the son of architect and designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (who designed the Red and Blue Chair – one of the most recognisable pieces of the De Stijl movement).
The Recent table is a great example of Wim’s work – it features black painted folded steel legs and a ciranol (paper and resin) laminate top. Together, the combination of these materials and utilitarian aesthetic reference the key design principles of Dutch modernism – functional, minimalist and wonderfully reductive in its form. It’s a super cool, pared-back piece for a contemporary home.
