About the work:
Between Two Worlds in Stoneware by Katarina Wells.
This piece is part of Talismans, Rafts, Mementos: a group exhibition showcasing the work of the entire community of Modern Times artists. Throughout 2020 artists used their practice to make sense of what was happening, and this show celebrates this rich vein of creative output.
“To paraphrase Arundhati Roy: ‘Historically pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew.’ This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next,” says Katarina.
About the Artist:
Austrian born Katarina Wells works from her home studio on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Most of her pieces grow slowly over a period of up to a week, a process that allows her to step back and observe where a piece intends to go. Raw oxides and porcelain slip are used on most of her works, a treatment that allows for the textured and tactile surface of the clay to remain. She is drawn to organic sculptural forms, finding inspiration in the natural beauty that surrounds her.
