Akua Earrings with Large Charm in Sterling Silver on Silver Hoop by A’Sika.
The story behind the Fertility Doll charm is one of femininity, motherhood and wishes for wellness. Akan society is matrilineal; it is extremely important that Akan women can give brith. Women who are barren often find themselves ostracised in their communities.
Legend has it that there once lived a woman called Akua who was unable to conceive so she visited a fetish priest who carved her a wooden doll to carry on her back. Akua took the doll home and cared for it as she would a real child. She was a laughing stock in her village, however she soon fell pregnant and gave birth. It is said that from then on, women adopted the practice of carrying ‘Akua’ba’ (meaning Akua’s child) on their backs in the hope of conceiving.
A’Sika was created in 2018 by Melbourne based designer Ella Badu. Inspired by traditional spirituality, regalia and the beauty in African symbolism, she handcrafts jewellery with a story to tell. Where possible, materials are sourced locally and created with primarily recycled or reclaimed precious metals.
