About the work:
Bright Blue & Pink Cylindrical Form with Gold Chunks & Pink Melt in Stoneware by Luke Ryan O’Connor.
This piece was created in response to Modern Times’s exhibition re:coquo for Melbourne Design Week 2021. Expanding on the broader Design Week theme of ‘Design the world you want’, re:coquo participants were invited to examine existing work, material or unresolved ideas and revisit the broken, forgotten or discarded with the aim of creating something anew.
“re:coquo has given me the opportunity to revisit/reimagine a cylindrical form. The cylinder is an archetypal shape in relation to the pottery wheel; virtually all shapes start out in cylinder form before being expanded into rounded vessels or bowls. The work has evolved from a single walled basic cylinder into a double walled complex hollow cylinder. Technically the work was achieved through duel thrown cylinders and a slip cast curved half donut shape which forms the top and bottom and closes the form,” says O’Connor.
About the Artist:
Luke Ryan O’Connor is a Sydney based artist whose expressive ceramic work plays with subverting notions of form and function. Traditional vase forms are rendered unusable with tiny openings or, in this case, a double walled cylinder that can not hold water.
