Inner Shell #2 in Glazed Ceramic by Bettina Willner

Inner Shell #2 in Glazed Ceramic by Bettina Willner

About the work:

Inner Shell #2 in Glazed Ceramic by Bettina Willner.

This series of hand-built ceramic sculptural vessels takes inspiration from a macro view of washed-up beach matter. Broken shells, coral, lost fishing tackle, and seaweed is conveyed within the structure and surface of Inner Shell’s totemic forms. These works came about after many hours spent walking and photographing discoveries in GunaiKurnai country, the land of the Brataualung people. Willner’s studio process then began with the sculpting of shapes using hand-building coil technique, then carving to achieve curves and angles. The twisted coil is revealed in the hollow of the vessel. The bubbly bleached pink eroded surface is an application of glaze that is the signature of my work. Her intent is to replicate the feeling of well-being and energize our spirits when walking in nature, and bring this energy to our own homes.

Exhibited at Melbourne Design Fair 2022 until 20 March, 2022.
