Every now and then we come across a show stopping, particularly high calibre piece of Dutch design; this sideboard designed by Cees Braakman for Pastoe is one of them. Braakman and Pastoe had a long and fruitful relationship; Braakman steered them in a pioneering modernist direction in the middle and latter part of the 20th Century. This oak sideboard was created in the 1960s as part of their famous ‘Made to Measure’ series – designed to allow customers to choose from a variety of timbers and configurations and self-assemble. It features white laminated doors – a beautiful contrast against the honey-coloured oak – as well as sleek metal handles and cylindrical timber feet. It’s a great example of how Dutch design evolved throughout the 20th Century, working with a mixture of timber and man-made materials.
